FWD: New report shows GOP donor funding recall effort

Hi, it's Chesa Boudin.

Thanks to new disclosures, we now know that the top donor to the recall effort is billionaire Republican William Oberndorf.

In 2021 alone, Oberndorf gave over $600,000 in cash to fund the recall effort, including more than $300,000 in stock.

And In 2020, he gave $1.5 million to Mitch McConnell's Leadership PAC.

The recall committee has raised more than $2.5 million from fewer than 20 individual donors like Oberndorf. Compare that to our campaign, which has more than 1,500 individual contributors -- mostly under $50 at a time.

With the election fast-approaching, I need your help. Will you consider donating $50 or more to our campaign right now to help me stop William Oberndorf and the other GOP mega-donors funding this recall effort?

The shadowy PAC funding the Boudin recall has finally been forced to disclose its last six months of donations -- and it’s no surprise that their top donor is once again billionaire Republican William Oberndorf.

In 2021 alone, Oberndorf gave over $600,000 in cash to fund the recall effort, including more than $300,000 in stock.

So who is William Oberndorf? Put simply, he’s a wealthy friend of Mitch McConnell. In fact, he gave $1.5 million to McConnell’s Leadership PAC in 2020.

Look, the recall committee has raised more than $2.5 million from fewer than 20 individual donors like William Oberndorf. Compare that to our campaign, which has more than 1,500 individual contributors -- mostly under $50 at a time.

We’re up against a difficult recall challenge. So we need to ask for your support. Please, consider donating $50 or more to our campaign today to help us stand up to William Oberndorf and the other GOP mega-donors funding this recall effort.

Thank you for your help,

The Republican billionaire behind the recall effort:

Here’s what you need to know about the recall effort: Two-thirds of their money (more than $1.8 million!) comes from a single PAC.

And that PAC has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from one single Republican billionaire donor.

They want you to think that this recall effort has a broad base of support from folks all across San Francisco. But we know that’s not true: It’s funded by a select group of wealthy conservatives who don’t like the reforms we’re making to improve the criminal justice system in San Francisco.

Our campaign, on the other hand, has the support of more than 1,500 grassroots donors because we are building a people-powered movement.

So if you’re ready to join us, chip in any amount to my campaign today. Together, we’ll be strong enough to stand up to any billionaire Republican:

We have exciting news

We have some really exciting news, and we wanted you to be the first to hear…

We are launching our field program!

Will you help us get this program off on the right foot by chipping in any amount to Chesa's campaign today?

Hiring and paying our field staff,
who will be responsible for meeting San Franciscans where they are to talk about the stakes of this recall. Here's what your generosity will help us acheive:

  •
  • Designing and printing materials to educate our neighbors about our office and this recall.

  • Building out a large enough field program to stop Republicans from repealing all the progress we’ve made.

But we can’t do any of that without your support. So today, we're humbly asking you to make a contribution of any amount. Thanks for helping us build this campaign,

Do you support Chesa’s efforts to make San Francisco safer?

District Attorney Chesa Boudin is committed to making San Francisco a safer place for all of us.

Recently, he joined with more than 25 district attorneys from across the U.S. to urge a federal court to allow the Government of Mexico to proceed with a lawsuit alleging that U.S. gun manufacturers are liable for crimes committed with their weapons across the border.

The DA’s office has worked tirelessly to get guns off the streets, meanwhile, these gun manufacturers are perpetuating violence and harm in our city.

They must be held accountable.

Will you add your name to our petition today to show that you support Chesa Boudin’s common sense steps to address gun violence?

This is directly from Chesa Boudin:

“The defendant gun manufacturers send guns to Mexico, where transnational drug cartels use them to inflict violence on both sides of the border. These gun manufacturers are empowering the drug traffickers flooding our streets with fentanyl and methamphetamines. We must hold these gun manufacturers accountable for the devastating violence and harm they are inflicting on our communities.”

We couldn't agree more.

If you agree too, sign on to our petition and let us know.

Thanks for using your voice today,

In honor of Black History Month

This week marked the beginning of Black History Month.

This year, I hope you’ll join me in honoring this important month in our country by committing to fight for criminal justice reform.

Over the past few years, we’ve followed in the footsteps of many great leaders who fought institutional racism and disparate treatment under the law. Here’s some of what we’ve done:

  • Created new policies to limit charges resulting from racist, pretextual police stops.

  • Limited the use of gang and status enhancements, which have contributed to racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

  • Invited all District Attorney Staff to take a racial equity pledge.

  • Dedicated an Assistant District Attorney to prosecute hate crimes, and conducting trainings with the SFPD on gathering evidence necessary to prosecute.

But, there's so much more we can do.

So today, in honor of Black History Month, I’m asking you to sign my petition and show your support for combatting racism in the criminal justice system:

Voter suppression by another name

We’ve seen a disturbing trend of voter suppression going on across the country in recent years, culminating with Donald Trump’s “Big Lie,” his refusal to support a peaceful transfer of power, and the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol.

Now, we’re seeing it play out in California, where right-wing billionaires are attempting to subvert the will of the voters by pursuing recalls against Governor Newsom, myself, and others.

Let's be clear: The recall effort is voter suppression by another name. They know they can’t win an election on their own merits, so they’re trying to remove me from office and stop our reform movement in its tracks.

The billionaires behind the recall effort are spending lavishly -- they’ve already spent more than $1.4 million and have promised to spend $5 million to recall us.

I don’t have a rolodex full of billionaire benefactors lining up to write blank checks and fund our efforts. I have you -- a grassroots movement that is committed to advancing the cause of criminal justice reform. Will you make a contribution now to help us fight back?

I’m doing what San Franciscans elected me to do: End cash bail, reduce youth incarceration, hold police accountable, and keep our city safe.

We can’t let them rig the system in order to stop our movement in its tracks.

Thanks for joining the fight,

Chesa Boudin

BREAKING: Republican Recall committee violated campaign laws

Hi, it’s Honey Mahogany, chair of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee, writing to you on behalf of Chesa Boudin, the progressive prosecutor fighting to reform our criminal justice system.

new report shows the committee working to overturn the will of the voters and throw Chesa out of office has violated campaign laws by misrepresenting its paid spokesperson as an independent critic.

Put simply, the recall committee is trying to pretend to be a home-grown Democratic movement, but they’re actually paid shills for the GOP.

As the chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party, I stand with Chesa. And I want to make clear that you should not be fooled by illegal, GOP-funded ads trying to stop our criminal justice reform movement in its tracks.

The recall committee is trying to pretend it isn’t funded by the GOP, but we know the truth. And voters deserve to know who is behind this effort.

Chesa’s campaign is fighting tooth and nail to expose the Republican recall for what it is, but they have a massive fundraising advantage, and we need your help. Can we count on you to donate $20 or more to help us defeat the recall and keep our movement on track?

By design, California has very strong rules for transparency and campaign advertising.

Chesa’s team takes great care to follow these rules to the letter. By brazenly breaking the rules and misrepresenting who they are and where their money comes from, they’re showing they have little respect for fair elections or for the votes.

It's time the recall effort was held accountable for their actions.

Thanks for helping us fight back,

Honey Mahogany

FWD: We know who's behind the recall effort

Hi, it's Chesa Boudin.

We're locked in a fight for the future of criminal justice reform.

The Republicans funding the recall want to roll back our progress -- they'll bring back cash bail, increase child incarceration, and allow police to act with impunity.

Their policies would make us less safe. And the GOP mega-donors behind the recall effort are spending lavishly to take our city backwards.

We're facing a massive cash disadvantage, and I need your help. So we've set a goal of raising $5,000 before midnight on January 31.

Will you chip in $50 or more to help my campaign correct the record and expose the right-wing recall for what it is?

Thanks for your support,

Chesa Boudin

The campaign to recall San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin has a fundraising advantage of more than $2 million, thanks to an influx of cash from Republican donors in and outside of California.

Paid political operatives are using this money to distort Chesa's record -- with the goal of repealing reforms that protect workers, keep kids out of jail, and that have led to a dramatic increase in conviction rates for violent crimes.

Here's a snapshot of who is behind the Republican con:

  • William Oberndorf, who has donated more than $1 million to the GOP, supported Betsy DeVos, and put $50,000 in a measure that criminalized homelessness in 2016.

  • Diane "Dede" Wilsey, a San Francisco "socialite" and major GOP donor, was a co-host of a fundraiser in San Francisco with Donald Trump, Jr.

  • Mary Jung and Jay Cheng, the chief lobbyists for the San Francisco Board of Realtors, facilitated a $50,000 cash injection to the anti-Boudin recall effort.

  • Chicago-based Daniel O'Keefe donated $50,000 to the recall effort as well as Republican David Perdue’s U.S. Senate campaign in Georgia.

  • David DeWilde, a real estate investor, donated $100,000 to one of the committees behind the recall effort.

Here’s the bottom line: This recall is a con. Put together by GOP mega-donors and their operatives as part of a national right-wing effort to undermine progressive criminal justice reform. And like Donald Trump, they do not believe in accepting the outcome of elections when they lose.

Reverse Chesa's ban on cash bail,
sending our city back to a time when there was a multi-pronged criminal justice system that overly penalized poor people.  If these Republican millionaires are successful, they will:

  •
  • Increase child incarceration, leading to a cycle of poverty and crime that hurts the most vulnerable communities.

  • Allow police to act with impunity, causing a tension-filled relationship between cops and the communities they serve, leading to less trust and more crime.

We don’t have billionaire benefactors lining up to write blank checks to support our campaign. Ours is a grassroots movement and we need your help.

Please, donate what you can to help Chesa Boudin to fight back against the GOP recall.

FWD: Why Silicon Valley "Tech Bros" are coming after me

Hi, it's Chesa Boudin.

The right-wing "tech bros" funding the recall effort have been lying about crime in San Francisco for two years -- and it's time we fought back.

Here’s the truth: They are spending millions of dollars to send our city back to a time before we ended cash bail, reduced youth incarceration, and held police accountable.

If they are successful, we'll go back to a time when innocents languished behind bars, workers were exploited, and police acted with impunity. So I need your help:

Can you donate to our campaign and help me keep our reform movement on track?

Chesa BoudinThank you,

    Sent on Monday, January 24, 2022 at 12:45 p.m.

In 2019, Chesa Boudin won his election with support from communities of color who wanted to make the criminal justice system less racist, and improve public safety through means other than mass incarceration.

Since taking office in January 2020, he’s built a reputation as one of the most impactful progressive prosecutors in the country -- by ending cash bail, reducing mass incarceration and holding police accountable.

But some tech investors aren't happy. They've claimed that Chesa is "coddling" criminals in San Francisco.

These are lies, plain and simple. The level of dishonesty and misinformation coming from the recall effort is staggering.

His billionaire friends have been spending lavishly to help fund the recall, including Tucker Carlson fan-boy David Sacks, and Facebook exec Chamath Palihapitiya. Last year, Jason Calacanis, an angel investor for Robinhood and uber, launched a GoFundMe to hire an "investigative reporter" to "hold the DA of SF accountable."

Here’s the problem: These right-wing tech venture capitalists are lying about crime in San Francisco. And the proof is in the pudding:

These tech investors and right-wing Trump supporters are spending millions to reverse our movement and take us back to a time when innocent people languished behind bars and police acted with impunity.

And most importantly, their policies will make our city less safe. So please, consider donating whatever amount is meaningful to you to help Chesa fight back and keep our city, and our movement on track.
