This was preventable

Real Justice

I write to you with a really heavy heart today. Because there’s a sad truth we have to acknowledge. Just hear me out, ok?

In 3 days, Julius Jones is scheduled to be executed.

The Oklahoma Pardon & Parole Board voted TWICE to commute his sentence to life with parole. But Governor Stitt is ignoring them completely.

What really makes my heart ache, though, is that this all could have been avoided from the start.

The District Attorney on this case, David Prater, could have freed Julius Jones with the stroke of a pen a long time ago. Instead, DA Prater has been hellbent on murdering Julius.

And if we had another DA in that office — one who was principled and understood that we need to rebuild our justice system — Julius would already be free.

We must work to elect DAs all across the country so that innocent people like Julius Jones are able to walk free. Please chip in to support Real Justice so we can elect candidates who will intervene in disastrous cases like Julius’ and save innocent lives.

After you’ve donated — or if you’re unable to chip in today — I need you to call key decision-makers in Julius’ case at 405-777-7840 and demand his freedom.

I know that this work is hard.

But it’s some of the most important work we will do in our lifetimes.

The work we do is — and I don’t think I can ever emphasize it enough — a matter of life or death.

Thank you for hearing me out. I appreciate you.

With love,

Shaun

WATCH: Video from outside Julius Jones' clemency hearing

On Monday, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board recommended that Governor Stitt commute Julius Jones' sentence to life with the possibility of parole for a second time. The Justice for Julius Movement is a human chain. Thank you all! We still have work to do!

Take Urgent Action For Julius Jones

On Monday at Julius Jones' clemency hearing, Julius was seen and heard for the first in over 20 years. After hearing from Julius & his defense team's compelling argument for Julius' innocence, the OK Pardon & Parole Board voted 3-1 to commute Julius' sentence to life with the possibility of parole.

WATCH: VIDEO FROM THE DAY OF THE HEARING

Now it is up to Governor Kevin Stitt to accept the board's recommendation and commute Julius' sentence.
Despite the Board's recommendation, Julius' execution date is still set for November 18

Julius urgently needs your help!

Witness to Innocence is the only national organization in the United States composed of and led by exonerated death row survivors and their family members. Our mission is to abolish the death penalty by empowering our members to become effective leaders in the abolition movement. We actively challenge political leaders and the public to grapple with the reality of a fatally flawed criminal justice system that sends innocent people to death row. We also seek ways to support death row survivors and their loved ones as they confront the challenges of life after exoneration.

BREAKING: Oklahoma Parole Board recommends to commute Julius Jones’ sentence

We’ve got big news: The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board just voted 3-1 to recommend to Governor Stitt that Julius Jones’ sentence be commuted to life with parole—an important step in bringing Julius home.

Your voices were a critical part in getting us here in the fight for Julius’ life through a chorus of public support and engagement. Help spread this news far and wide. Share it with your friends and family on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.

Although this means Julius will not be walking out a free man as soon as we hoped, he will soon be able to spend his days inside no longer on death row and in the future, be eligible for parole.

My heart is full of admiration for the incredible organizers that laid the foundation for today, including Cece Jones-Davis, who envisioned and committed herself to Julius’ freedom long before most of us, and the entire Justice for Julius coalition for their efforts.

I pray that Governor Stitt will accept today’s recommendation from the Pardon and Parole Board or—even better—commute Julius’ sentence to time served so that he is able to return home to his family for the first time in over 20 years.

I urge Julius’ supporters to continue making their voices heard and to remember: freedom is forever our goal. Take a moment right now to share the news with your networks on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.

Thanks for all of your support in the efforts to get justice for Julius. We’ll reach out with next steps and more action items to help soon.

Let’s bring Julius home.

Daniel
