STOCK Act 2.0

Katie Porter for Congress

This week I was proud to introduce the STOCK Act 2.0 to ban Members of Congress from trading stocks. Check out this clip of me telling Chris Hayes about this bill:

Back in 2012 while I was helping California families navigate the foreclosure crisis, I saw reports that Members of Congress used the information they had about the impending crisis for their own financial gain.

That’s why that same year, Congress passed the initial version of the STOCK Act, which prohibits members from making trades based on information they learn on the job. But recent investigations show that these provisions don’t go far enough, and too many people of both parties have violated the existing STOCK Act. Take former Senator Kelly Loeffler for example: She sold millions of dollars worth of stock after receiving a Senators-only briefing on COVID-19 in January of 2020.

Members of Congress shouldn’t be wheeling and dealing for themselves, they should be working for the American people. Americans deserve to know that their representatives are working for them. Only about one in four Americans trust our government to do what’s right, so it’s up to Congress to earn back their trust and show the people who elected us that we work for them.

Onward,

Katie Porter

Big Oil’s BS

Katie Porter for Congress

Big Oil is full of BS.

While polluting our environment, they’re also leaving behind thousands of oil wells and expecting taxpayers to deal with the clean up.

Here in California, roughly 35,000 oil and gas wells sit idle off our coast. Experts fear that polluters could leave behind around 70,000 wells if they’re not held accountable.

When my kids leave things around the house, I tell them to pick their stuff up. So why does Big Oil get to leave massive oil rigs in the middle of the ocean?

Here’s what we’re doing to stop the contamination: The bipartisan infrastructure bill that Congress passed in the fall will help plug some of these abandoned wells. I’ve also introduced legislation that would raise fees on polluters who are extracting from our public lands—saving taxpayers money and helping protect our environment.

Big Oil has profited at the expense of our planet and American taxpayers for too long. I’m proud to be holding them accountable.

Katie’s bill to stop scam PACs

Katie Porter for Congress

When you make a donation to our campaign, we know you’re entrusting us to spend that money wisely.

Unfortunately, there are PACs out there who are scamming Republicans and Democrats alike into giving them money—these scam PACs aren’t spending the money they raise reaching out to voters or advocating for an issue. They’re simply lining their own pockets.

That’s why Katie just introduced the SCAM PAC Act. This bill will crack down on predatory groups that are scamming people who are trying to participate in our democracy.

As a consumer protection attorney, Katie knows how important it is to have laws that protect people from scams and hold dishonest scammers accountable. What some of these PACs have been doing is especially egregious—going after seniors and veterans who just want to make a difference, all to make a quick profit.

Here at Katie Porter for Congress, we only share truthful information in our email solicitations, and your donations go directly to Katie’s campaign for Congress.

Thanks for being a part of our movement,

Ali A.

We all deserve healthcare

Katie Porter for Congress

The number one priority of our healthcare system should be serving patients.

Right now, the millions of Americans who don’t have health insurance, are under-insured, or are struggling to afford their family’s health coverage or prescriptions can tell you it sure doesn’t work that way.

Since first running for Congress, Katie’s been advocating for Medicare for All. Without meaningful changes to our healthcare system, we won’t see the patient outcomes we should: healthier, happier Americans who don’t fear they’re an accident or diagnosis away from bankruptcy.

As a consumer protection attorney, Katie has seen firsthand how Big Pharma and Big Insurance companies continue to prioritize profits over people. The unfortunate reality is that a decade after passing the Affordable Care Act, millions of Americans remain uninsured.

No matter their salary, age, or where they live: Every American should have access to healthcare.

What 450+ prescriptions have in common

Katie Porter for Congress

It may be a new year, but Big Pharma is still up to the same antics: raising prices on Americans.

Since January 1st, the prices of over 450 prescription drugs have already been raised—some by as much as 9%.

The high cost of prescription drugs hurts all of us. As a taxpayer, your tax dollars are spent covering what Big Pharma charges Medicare for these prescriptions. Katie’s been advocating that we fix this by allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices—which would save taxpayers billions. She’s also introduced legislation to stop Big Pharma from price gouging patients.

Still, Big Pharma continues to spend millions on lobbying, hoping they can drown out the voices of families across the country. Katie’s proud to be one of just a few members of Congress who doesn’t take a dime of their money.

That means Katie’s fight against Big Pharma is fully funded by people like you chipping in what you can. Consider supporting her campaign so she can continue to hold Big Pharma accountable and work to lower prices.

My first endorsements of ‘22

Katie Porter for Congress

I started Truth to Power PAC to help elect more progressives to Congress. Today, I’m excited to be announcing our very first endorsed candidates of the 2022 election cycle.

These candidates are leaders who I really believe in. They are running strong, grassroots-powered races in must-win seats, and if elected, they’ll join me in the fight to lower costs for families, protect the environment, and hold the powerful accountable. Let me tell you a little about them, and if you can, consider donating. Your contribution will support their campaigns and Truth to Power's mission of electing candidates like these.

Jessica Cisneros: TX-28

About Jessica: Jessica is a human rights attorney who has dedicated her career to advocating for working families, helping them navigate our broken immigration system.

The race: Election Day for Jessica is one month away! She’s running a grassroots campaign free of corporate PAC money so that she is only accountable to the community she aims to serve.

Why she’s running: Jessica knows that South Texans deserve a representative who will act in their best interest—not in the interest of the lobbyists and huge corporations who fund her opponent.

Yadira Caraveo: CO-08

About Yadira: Dr. Yadira Caraveo is a pediatrician and accomplished state legislator.

The race: Colorado’s 8th is a newly created district, thanks to Colorado’s population growth. This is a great opportunity for Democrats to win another seat in the House.

Why she’s running: As a pediatrician, she quickly understood that truly helping children required a lot more than what she was able to do as a doctor. That’s what inspired her to serve in Colorado’s state legislature, where she’s already passed legislation to fund preschool and lower the cost of prescription drugs. She knows how healthcare works and how to get things done, and she’s ready to bring that knowledge to Washington.

Quaye Quartey: CA-27

About Quaye: After retiring from two decades of active-duty military service at the rank of Commander, Quaye returned home to California and attended Stanford’s Graduate School of Business before starting his own small business. Quaye is the son of an immigrant and proud father.

The race: Quaye is challenging Republican Mike Garcia in CA-27, a district that includes Santa Clarita and Palmdale. This district is one of Democrats best chances to pick up a seat, but it won’t be an easy race—right now it’s considered a Republican toss-up.

Why he’s running: On January 6th, Quaye watched insurrectionists try to stand in the way of democracy. It was then he felt called to serve his country and community.

In order to create real change, we need to elect more progressive leaders like Dr. Yadira Caraveo, Quaye Quartey, and Jessica Cisneros. Join me in supporting their campaigns with a contribution that will be split amongst them and Truth to Power PAC.

Katie Porter started Truth to Power PAC to elect candidates who will stand up to the corporate special interests, lobbyists, and corrupt politicians who have dominated our government for far too long. Truth to Power only endorses candidates who Katie believes in, and who share her progressive values.

Katie’s 18 bills

Katie Porter for Congress

In 2021, Katie was proud to introduce 18 pieces of legislation. Her bills addressed everything from the high cost of health care to the record wildfires we’ve seen in California. Here’s a snapshot of her work:

Four bills Katie has introduced in the categories of investing in families, protecting the planet, lowering the cost of Rx drugs, and safeguarding elections.

We’re thankful to have you on Team Porter.

Onward to 2022!

Cancel it

Katie Porter for Congress

This week I led a letter formally asking the White House to publicly release a memo outlining the Administration's authority to cancel $50,000 worth of student debt per borrower.

We already know that canceling $50,000 worth of student loans would eliminate the debts of 36 million Americans. But beyond that, it would provide the jolt our economy needs—and that’s good for everyone, whether you have student loan debt or not.

I know what it’s like to walk across that graduation stage and have six figures worth of student loan debt. And over a decade after I took on that debt, I struggled to decide if I should use extra money to pay off my debt or put the money towards my own kids' college savings plan. Now, my oldest son is starting to look at colleges—and the price tag is daunting.

There is a real cost associated with not canceling student debt. Families and our economy as a whole are being held back by the high price of higher education and the often inevitable loans that come along with it. Nearly 90% of *fully-employed* Americans who have student loan debt say they’re not financially secure enough to resume student loan payments.

Join me in encouraging the Biden Administration to cancel student loan debt. And if you’re one of the millions of Americans who would benefit from this, I’d love to hear from you. Click here to tell me your story.
