The odds are stacked against us but we can do this

13 seats.

That’s how many seats Democrats lost in the House during the 2020 election. Even though we elected President Biden to the White House and gained four seats in the Senate, clinching the majority by one tie-breaking vote, we still lost key races, including many won in 2018 that helped secure our House majority.

Let me be clear — we still have a four-seat majority in the House. Barely enough to pass the American Rescue Plan without a single Republican vote. Not to mention the dozens of House-passed bills subject to Mitch McConnell’s filibuster — for voting rights, a $15 minimum wage, the Equality Act, paycheck fairness, background checks, D.C. statehood, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act — you name it, and the House has likely already done it.

And it’s crucial that we hang onto our majority in November so we can continue our work fighting for progress, building our Senate majority so we can abolish the filibuster, and pass this legislation to President Biden. But the odds are stacked against us. The president’s party typically loses an average of 26 seats during the midterm elections.

We don’t have 26 seats to spare to keep Democrats in power and Kevin McCarthy away from the Speaker’s gavel. We need to help new and incumbent Democrats win their races so we can keep McCarthy from getting anywhere near setting the House’s legislative agenda.

There’s no question that the GOP will block every bill possible if they reclaim the majority, and McCarthy is already threatening to strip me of my committee assignments if he becomes Speaker. It would also pave the way to his ability to overturn the next presidential election if Trump loses, and would pose a grave threat to our democracy. Clearing the way for an authoritarian dictatorship. So we need to fight back. Now.

I’m personally asking — can you make a small monthly donation to my campaign to help me win my re-election and support House Democrats running across the country? It’s crucial we help Democrats win key races to protect and strengthen our House majority.

Thank you for being a part of this team. I’m grateful for everything you do.

STOCK Act 2.0

Katie Porter for Congress

This week I was proud to introduce the STOCK Act 2.0 to ban Members of Congress from trading stocks. Check out this clip of me telling Chris Hayes about this bill:

Back in 2012 while I was helping California families navigate the foreclosure crisis, I saw reports that Members of Congress used the information they had about the impending crisis for their own financial gain.

That’s why that same year, Congress passed the initial version of the STOCK Act, which prohibits members from making trades based on information they learn on the job. But recent investigations show that these provisions don’t go far enough, and too many people of both parties have violated the existing STOCK Act. Take former Senator Kelly Loeffler for example: She sold millions of dollars worth of stock after receiving a Senators-only briefing on COVID-19 in January of 2020.

Members of Congress shouldn’t be wheeling and dealing for themselves, they should be working for the American people. Americans deserve to know that their representatives are working for them. Only about one in four Americans trust our government to do what’s right, so it’s up to Congress to earn back their trust and show the people who elected us that we work for them.

Onward,

Katie Porter

Big Oil’s BS

Katie Porter for Congress

Big Oil is full of BS.

While polluting our environment, they’re also leaving behind thousands of oil wells and expecting taxpayers to deal with the clean up.

Here in California, roughly 35,000 oil and gas wells sit idle off our coast. Experts fear that polluters could leave behind around 70,000 wells if they’re not held accountable.

When my kids leave things around the house, I tell them to pick their stuff up. So why does Big Oil get to leave massive oil rigs in the middle of the ocean?

Here’s what we’re doing to stop the contamination: The bipartisan infrastructure bill that Congress passed in the fall will help plug some of these abandoned wells. I’ve also introduced legislation that would raise fees on polluters who are extracting from our public lands—saving taxpayers money and helping protect our environment.

Big Oil has profited at the expense of our planet and American taxpayers for too long. I’m proud to be holding them accountable.

Just announced: I have a GOP challenger

“Schiff is one of the most powerful Leftists in Congress and by far the most dishonest... and I’m thrilled I get to be the lady who finally kicks him out of Washington.”

— My New GOP Opponent

I’ll keep this short.

This morning, a far-right Trump Republican announced their candidacy against me for California’s 30th Congressional District. But here’s the thing, despite her many misleading statements and smears... I’ll bet you she’ll receive support from the Republican Party.

Why? Because the Republican Party is no longer one of ideas, or even ideology. And it certainly has no devotion to anything resembling the truth. In fact, under Trump it is little more than a party of lies and vitriol, and only cares about pleasing their disgraced leader in Mar-a-Lago.

Every day I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent you in Congress. And I’ll do everything I can to defeat this challenger and any others who enter the race in the coming months.

Knowing the target on my back, with Trump and McCarthy attacking me every week, GOP donors will pour millions of dollars into the race against me, just as they did last cycle. But I refuse to back down.

I don’t say this lightly, but our democracy hinges on the results of the election this November as much as it will in November of 2024.

Thank you for all you do. And thank you for being part of our fast response team.

My new district

For the past 10 years, I’ve represented the same stretch of neighborhoods within California's 28th Congressional District. From my home in Burbank to West Hollywood, Glendale, Pasadena, Little Armenia, Silver Lake, and so many incredible places in between.

With redistricting, I’m running to represent tens of thousands of new voters and new communities across Los Angeles. And in what’s become a redistricting tradition, my staff and I piled into a car at 8:45 am to visit the new areas of the district — California’s 30th Congressional District — and meet voters.

Like any good Southern Californian, I started the day at the Original Farmer's Market. It was great to meet so many folks, hear their stories, and their passion for our country and democracy. Also, I discovered some great vegan jerky (not kidding).

We moved from the Farmer’s Market to the Grove next door, where I popped into a bookstore, signed a few copies of my book to surprise future shoppers.

From there, we piled in the car again to head over to Park LaBrea. It’s the largest rental property in all of Los Angeles, and fun fact, it was founded as a planned community post-World War II by the same developer that built the neighborhood in NYC where my wife was born — Stuyvesant Town. We dropped in on some residents to get their perspective on the communities needs and concerns.

These residents confirmed what I’ve long known and have been fighting for in Congress: Rent prices are astronomical everywhere, but housing costs are especially out of control in Los Angeles. And the relief passed by Congress during COVID is not enough. Affordable housing is scarce. It’s preventing too many from owning homes, and is a major contributor to our homelessness crisis. We need to create more affordable housing. Now.

On our way to Miracle Mile, we stopped by a memorial outside a furniture store on La Brea, to pay our respects to Brianna Kupfer, a young woman who was tragically murdered at that site. Violent crime has been on the rise since the pandemic has begun to subside. We need to invest in our communities, from community first policing programs to better mental health services, so we can ensure our neighborhoods stay safe.

After a long day of traveling around, bumping elbows, and meeting so many new constituents, it was time to have some fun. My staff was a tad embarrassed by some of the “dad” photos I was taking – but hey, how often do you get the time to visit the tar pits, the largest section of the Berlin Wall outside Berlin, and LA County’s famous museum row?

Here’s where you come in. I’m inspired to fight for these communities and all of those that I’ve represented for the last decade. And I’m determined to make them proud of who represents them in the nation’s capital.

I just announced my campaign last month. But it takes campaign resources to really introduce myself to all of these new voters. If you can, please pitch in a few dollars so I can campaign to represent California's new 30th Congressional District. It would mean so much to me.

Thanks for reading this email. It’s days like this that keep me energized. And supporters like you that make this fight worth it. Thanks for all you do.

— Adam

P.S. I still can’t get over the fact these woolly mammoths roamed Los Angeles during the Ice Age — that’s crazy!

Did you see Ro on the Colbert show this week?

Ro Khanna

Hey, we wanted to make sure you saw this.

Why Rep. Ro Khanna Is Pushing For An Internet Bill Of Rights

California congressman Rep. Ro Khanna makes his first visit to The Late Show to chat with Stephen about Big Tech's influence over our lives and why he believes an "Internet Bill of Rights' is needed. Learn more about Rep. Khanna's work in his new book, "Dignity in a Digital Age."

Ro joined Stephen Colbert to discuss everything from one of Ro’s first activist efforts when he was 14 to what the internet has become today. You can listen to the full story here.

Trust us, you won’t want to miss this.

More soon,

Team Ro

Subject: My chat with Colbert

I had to share this with you.

On Monday night, I sat down with Stephen Colbert to discuss dignity and diplomacy and how I have always had a strong conviction against any decision which violates human rights.

My grandfather spent four years in jail alongside Mahatma Gandhi in protest of British colonialism during the Indian Independence Movement. This is deeply personal to me.

In my interview, Colbert unearthed a letter I wrote to my local paper when I was in junior high condemning then-president George H. W. Bush for his decision to enter the First Gulf War, risking the lives of American soldiers for economic gain. Even at 14, I knew it was vital to advocate for diplomacy and human rights above all else.

I am running for re-election because I believe, like my grandfather, that dignity is non-negotiable. Dignity is the way you treat yourself, it is the way you treat others and how others respect you in return.

It should never be taken lightly.

— Ro
