Today’s Action: Pass the C.R.O.W.N. Act!

major part of racial justice is the end of hair discrimination, as natural Black hair is innately tied to racial cultural identity. Black women are 80% more likely to think they must change their natural hairstyles to fit into the office, according to the DOVE Crown Research study in 2019.

To ask Black people to remove themselves from that identity in order to fit better into predominantly white spaces and conform to European beauty standards is racism, no question about it.

Black people deserve the space to embody their full cultural identity whenever, wherever, without judgement. There is nothing about natural Black hair that is unprofessional, and the passage of C.R.O.W.N. Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) will help to protect against discrimination related to protective natural hairstyles in the workplace and public schools.

Call (202-224-3121) or email your representatives and demand they support the C.R.O.W.N. Act!

The most recent year has been a wake up call for many about the racism that has plagued our country since its conception. That racism is no stranger to the day-to-day operations of our workplaces or our school systems. According to the aforementioned DOVE study, Black women are 1.5x more likely to be sent home from the workplace because of their hair -- something that has zero effect on their standing as employees.

Wearing protective and natural hairstyles is indistinguishable from celebrating racial cultural identity. Discriminating against one of the two actions is discriminating against the other.

Being Black is absolutely not unprofessional or distracting.

Call (202-224-3121) or email your representatives and tell them to take a stand against discrimination with the passage of the C.R.O.W.N. Act!
