JD Vance and the gospel of unchecked power

Since the day I took the oath of office, I have strived to live up to its words

When Senators like me take office, we take an oath. Just like the President does. Here’s what it says:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."

Since the day I took that oath, I have strived to live up to its words.

Donald Trump, however, has spent the first four months of his presidency betraying it.

He has thrown out due process — which is guaranteed by the Constitution — to crack down on free speech. He has violated checks and balances by ignoring court orders and slashing budgets that were legally set by Congress. He pardoned the criminals responsible for the January 6th insurrection. He has proven himself and his administration to be openly corrupt for their own financial gain. And the list goes on.

So today, I am asking you to make a pledge of your own: Pledge to stay committed to the fight to defend our democracy and the Constitution that makes that democracy possible.

If we are going to take on Trump’s lawlessness, we must stand together as an organized movement. It’s going to take action in Congress, in the courts, in our workplaces, and in the streets.

So please: Add your name and take the pledge to defend our democracy against the Trump administration and the authoritarians on the far-right. Our commitment to our nation’s values of fairness, civil rights, and justice for all is our most powerful weapon right now.

ADD YOUR NAME

I hope you will join me today in doubling down on our belief in the power of democracy. Enjoy the rest of the holiday.

In solidarity,

Ed Markey

Tim Walz says ICE Agents are Trump's ‘Modern-Day Gestapo’

Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota and Kamala Harris' running mate in the 2024 presidential election, is facing criticism from officials at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after comparing federal law enforcement agents implementing President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown to a Nazi-era political police force. The comments came during the Democrat's commencement speech at the University of Minnesota Law School graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 17, in which he referred to the Trump administration's rapid and controversial deportations, including of pro-Palestinian activists on college campuses and immigrants. “Donald Trump’s modern-day Gestapo is scooping folks up off the streets,” Walz said in his remarks. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sharply criticized Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) for comparing immigration enforcement officers under President Trump to the secret police force of Nazi Germany in a commencement speech over the weekend. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said likening the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to the Gestapo is “sickening” in a statement Tuesday. “Governor Walz’s comments comparing ICE agents to the Gestapo is sickening,” McLaughlin said. “This type of rhetoric and demonization of ICE officers has led to our officers facing a 413% increase in assaults.” Join this channel to get access to perks:    / @electronsinc

Rep. Jasmine Crockett: The Constitution Isn’t That Complicated… Unless You’re the GOP

In a Judiciary Committee markup, Rep. Jasmine Crockett schools her GOP colleagues on the basics of the Constitution. While Republicans push tired, failed policies like mandatory minimums, Crockett brings the receipts — quoting directly from a 2025 Supreme Court ruling (yes, Trump’s court) to remind everyone that the Fifth Amendment guarantees due process, even for immigrants. If they cared about the Constitution half as much as they claim to, Rep. Crockett wouldn’t need to keep breaking it down.

SIGN ON: Protect our right to protest without persecution!

I wise man once said "I MAY NOT AGREE WITH YOU, BUT WILL DEFEND TO

MY DEATH YOUR RIGHT TO SAY IT!"

JUST BECAUSE TRUMP DISAGREES WITH PROTESTS & THE OPINIONS OF

OTHERS - GET OVER IT!

THIS IS HOW DICTATORS BEHAVE!

It's time to reign in the ICE GESTAPO!

WE ARE TRULY BLESSED WITH AN INTERNATIONAL  PRESENCE WHO COME TO STUDY, RESEARCH & CONTRIBUTE TO OUR COMMUNITIES!

LET'S REMEMBER THAT DAFFY DON BANNED MUSLIMS FROM THE NATION....ONLY TO SUCK UP TO THEM FOR HIS GRIFT & CORRUPTION - TRUMP PRAISED REPRESSIVE & BRUTAL DICTATORS ONLY FOR HIS PERSONAL BENEFIT & CORRUPTION!

THIS IS A DEMOCRACY! LET'S PROTECT IT!

First Amendmentamendment (1791) to the Constitution of the United States that is part of the Bill of Rights and reads,

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The clauses of the amendment are often called the establishment clause, the free exercise clause, the free speech clause, the free press clause, the assembly clause, and the petition clause.

This is not a drill. Trump is weaponizing ICE and Homeland Security to arrest and disappear people, including students, professors, and everyday people, in yet another power grab demonstrating his complete disregard for our rights and freedoms.

People with lawful status who have done nothing wrong—nothing but exercise their right to dissent—are being taken away by masked, plainclothes agents, locked away without charges, and faced with deportation. This is happening right now in America.

This is not about national security. It’s a dangerous escalation of authoritarian tactics meant to silence, control, and intimidate the rest of us into compliance and silence. Add your name to the petition defending the right of everyone to dissent without political retaliation.

Mahmoud Khalil, a student activist with legal status, was detained after speaking out for Palestinian rights. Trump called it “the first of many”—and he meant it.

Yunseo Chung, a junior at Columbia University who has lived here since she was 7, had her residency status revoked for nothing more than participating in a campus protest.

This is political persecution, plain and simple. Will you sign the petition to demand an end to Trump’s political arrests and defend our right to protest without fear?

Trump is trying to threaten and intimidate people to see how far he can unlawfully wield his power and influence. Already, universities are caving to his demands—from Columbia University making it easier for law enforcement to arrest and remove students to the University of Michigan closing its Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.1,2 It’s disturbing how swiftly institutions are folding to Trump’s demands, and it only emboldens the Trump administration as it bulldozes over our rights.

This will not stop with immigrants. None of us are safe when dissent is treated like a crime. We know this is terrifying, but here’s the truth: The need to silence people isn’t a show of strength; it’s a sign of fear. When public opinion turns against the powerful, they panic.

This crackdown is Trump’s fearful response to losing control. We can’t let fear and repression win.

Thanks for all you do.
