Racist politicians and racist redistricting

Justice Democrats

2022 has given state legislators the opportunity to redraw Congressional maps, oftentimes to tip the scales, protect political power, and institutionally disenfranchise Black, brown, and low-income voters.

Gerrymandering is the new Jim Crow, and its effects are being seen across the country as legislators divide diverse communities into separate congressional districts in order to dilute the collective strength of Black and brown voters.

In Nashville, Republicans have redrawn Justice Democrat Odessa Kelly’s Congressional District. The GOP broke up Nashville into different House districts that favor Republicans in order to destroy a progressive stronghold in the South. Racist politicians have been carving out electoral districts and suppressing the vote at the expense of Black and brown voters for decades, enabled by weak national voting rights laws and the filibuster.

Will you help us fight back? At this moment, we need our movement to stand up against unfair election maps, keep Odessa in the fight, and ensure Black and brown voices are heard in Nashville. That is why we’re asking you to split a contribution between Justice Democrats and Odessa Kelly’s campaign — so we’re ready for whatever comes next.

Nashville is just one example of the impact of gerrymandering, and the need for national comprehensive voting rights legislation. That is why Justice Democrats are working hard, not just to elect Odessa Kelly, but to fight voter suppression and abolish the racist filibuster.

The politicians drawing up these maps know that the collective power of our movement is unstoppable. But at this moment, we need to use that power to fight these racist maps and elect working people to Congress. Will you join us by splitting a contribution between Odessa’s campaign and Justice Democrats?

Our slate

Justice Democrats

In the last several months, we’ve seen the impact of just a few progressives standing up for working people, and fighting corporate interests head-on. And we’re working to elect 5 new Justice Democrats to join them: Odessa Kelly, Rana Abdelhamid, Jessica Cisneros, Kina Collins, and Summer Lee.

Odessa, Rana, Jessica, Kina, and Summer don’t have billionaires or corporate PAC money behind them. Their people-powered campaigns are fueled by the same grassroots movement that unseated corporate Democrats and elected Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Jamaal Bowman, and Cori Bush.

The final FEC deadline of the year for our full slate is coming up at the end of the month, and we’re behind on the $200k we need to raise for our JD primary candidates by the end of the quarter.

Odessa, Rana, Jessica, Kina, and Summer are running in districts that are currently represented by incumbents who have failed to fight for the people that elected them. They’ve chosen instead to represent the interests of Wall Street, real estate developers, pharmaceutical companies, and other big corporations.

Just like AOC, Ilhan, Cori, and other Justice Democrats — our JD slate is ready to take on the tough fights to stand for working people in Congress. But challenging opponents with deep pockets and big campaign war chests will be no easy task.

We need to do our part to help Odessa, Rana, Jessica, Kina, and Summer put up big fundraising numbers and fuel their campaigns going into the 2022 primaries.

In solidarity,

Justice Democrats

What's critical about right now:

Justice Democrats

Nearly 90% of Congressional races are won by the candidate who spends more money. We’ve won races with less money, like when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat a high-ranking corporate Democrat in 2018. But it’s really hard to do, and that’s one of the reasons AOC’s victory shocked the political establishment so much.

AOC’s opponent in 2018 spent at least 5 times more than she did on the primary election. AOC won because she was what NY-14 needed, had a strong campaign, and a strong message. We helped her build that campaign.

As we build power and see the impact of the 10 Justice Democrats in Congress, we’ve been able to close the spending gap. Then, more challenges came our way. The political establishment started spending millions through Super PACs to smear our candidates. Centrist and right-wing groups, big corporations and Wall Street all started flooding money into our races to keep corporate Democrats in office.

We continue to shock the political establishment because of our grassroots support. We do our best to match the unlimited resources of the political establishment with donations of $3, $16.95 (our average donation this year), $27 or more from folks like you. We rely on your support 100%, we don’t take a cent from corporate PACs.

And we use your donations strategically. We build campaigns to win, help our candidates hire staff, set up field organizing operations, support media strategies, and so much more.

We’re supporting four primary challengers for 2022 — Jessica Cisneros, Odessa Kelly, Kina Collins, and Rana Abdelhamid — with more to come. That takes a lot of money, especially when our opponents are bankrolled by Wall Street and the Democratic establishment. These primaries are around the corner (Jessica’s is in March!) and we need your help right now to expand progressive power in Congress.
