Last summer, Reps. Hakeem Jeffries and Josh Gottheimer launched Team Blue PAC to protect corporate Democrats from progressive primary challengers. Back in June, we predicted that Team Blue PAC would be another way for corporate Democrats to raise money from corporate donors to protect themselves and the interests of their donors.

FEC numbers were just released and we were right: Team Blue PAC is being funded by corporations and their lobbyists.

Super PAC just endorsed against 3 of our candidates

 

We've seen this before.

A Republican-funded Super PAC called the Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI) just endorsed against three of our candidates.

In the 2020 presidential primary, DMFI spent a ton of money running TV ads smearing Bernie Sanders. DMFI was desperately scared of progressives winning power, and they still are.

Also in 2020, DMFI spent $2 million against Jamaal Bowman, smearing him with ugly attack ads in NY-16’s congressional primary.

Now, DMFI is officially working against Summer Lee, Marie Newman, and Rana Abdelhamid. The political establishment is working hard to stop Justice Democrats from winning their primaries, just like they did to Bernie and just like they tried to do to Jamaal.

NEW: Cuellar's ties to Azerbaijan oil company

 

By now you know the FBI raided Rep. Henry Cuellar’s home and campaign office earlier this week. Today, we learned the FBI investigation is about business relationships in Azerbaijan.

We also JUST learned more about Henry Cuellar’s relationship with oil executives in Azerbaijan. This just broke from The Intercept:

It’s an investigative report about a trip Cuellar took to Azerbaijan, the murky web of funding and relationships Cuellar formed with oil executives, and Cuellar’s subsequent advocacy for Azerbaijan oil interests.

Cuellar’s corporate-backed re-election campaign is in trouble, but he still has a ton of campaign money to try and get through this news cycle. But we can’t let him win re-election. We must send a flood of support to Jessica Cisneros to ensure we can defeat Cuellar in this rapidly approaching House primary.

Here’s the deal: our fundraising this month has really slowed down. While we were able to raise big for Jessica Cisneros and our other primary candidates, we’re $13,348 behind what we need to raise by tomorrow at midnight in order to reach our goal.

Racist politicians and racist redistricting

 

2022 has given state legislators the opportunity to redraw Congressional maps, oftentimes to tip the scales, protect political power, and institutionally disenfranchise Black, brown, and low-income voters.

Gerrymandering is the new Jim Crow, and its effects are being seen across the country as legislators divide diverse communities into separate congressional districts in order to dilute the collective strength of Black and brown voters.

In Nashville, Republicans have redrawn Justice Democrat Odessa Kelly’s Congressional District. The GOP broke up Nashville into different House districts that favor Republicans in order to destroy a progressive stronghold in the South. Racist politicians have been carving out electoral districts and suppressing the vote at the expense of Black and brown voters for decades, enabled by weak national voting rights laws and the filibuster.

Cuellar shows up at anti-abortion event

 

Yesterday, Henry Cuellar accepted an award from March for Life, an extreme anti-abortion group that opposes Roe v. Wade. That was his FIRST public appearance since his house and campaign office were raided by the FBI.

It’s bad enough that Henry Cuellar takes millions from Big Oil, Wall Street, private prisons, Big Pharma, and other corporate PACs. It’s really bad that his home and office were raided as part of an investigation led by the DOJ team that handles issues related to bribery, corruption, election crimes, and more.

And it’s despicable that Henry Cuellar continues his advocacy AGAINST abortion rights. He’s the only anti-abortion Democrat remaining in the House, he’s co-sponsored anti-abortion legislation with Republicans, and he was the only Democrat to vote against a bill to codify Roe v. Wade after Texas enacted extreme abortion restrictions in the state.

We must take advantage of this moment and help progressive fighter Jessica Cisneros defeat the anti-abortion corporate-backed Cuellar. Henry Cuellar's FBI entanglements

 

Here’s what we know about Henry Cuellar:

The FBI raided his home and office as part of an investigation led by the DOJ team that handles issues related to bribery, corruption, election crimes, and more. That investigation is related to ties between U.S. businessmen and Azerbaijan.

We separately also know the ties between Cuellar and a dark money anti-abortion group could violate federal election law, according to investigative reporting at The Intercept. A close aide to Cuellar launched the dark money group and is spending money to defeat Justice Democrat Jessica Cisneros.

DOJ and FBI investigating Henry Cuellar

 

Earlier we told you the news about the FBI raiding Rep. Henry Cuellar’s house AND campaign office, and hauling out boxes of evidence.

Now, CNN is reporting that the Department of Justice is involved — specifically, the DOJ’s Public Integrity Unit, which oversees the investigation and prosecution of crimes like bribery of public officials and election crimes.

We still don’t know much about the investigation, but we know it’s serious. And we know this could be a turning point in Jessica Cisneros’ campaign to defeat the corporate-backed incumbent. Cuellar has millions in corporate PAC money, and this is an absolutely critical moment when we need to flood Jessica’s campaign with grassroots donations.

We’re 15 days into this crucial election year, and we’ve been working hard to achieve our 2022 resolution to help progressive fighters win primaries, unseat corporate Democrats, and fundamentally transform the Democratic party.

Our slate

 

In the last several months, we’ve seen the impact of just a few progressives standing up for working people, and fighting corporate interests head-on. And we’re working to elect 5 new Justice Democrats to join them: Odessa Kelly, Rana Abdelhamid, Jessica Cisneros, Kina Collins, and Summer Lee.

Odessa, Rana, Jessica, Kina, and Summer don’t have billionaires or corporate PAC money behind them. Their people-powered campaigns are fueled by the same grassroots movement that unseated corporate Democrats and elected Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Jamaal Bowman, and Cori Bush.

The final FEC deadline of the year for our full slate is coming up at the end of the month, and we’re behind on the $200k we need to raise for our JD primary candidates by the end of the quarter.

Odessa, Rana, Jessica, Kina, and Summer are running in districts that are currently represented by incumbents who have failed to fight for the people that elected them. The political establishment is targeting the Squad

 

The entire political establishment has attacked the Squad this year. Right-wing foreign policy hawks at AIPAC, extremists on Fox News, and corporate Democrats — they've all targeted the Squad. The political establishment attacks Cori, Jamaal, AOC, Rashida, Ilhan, and Ayanna because Justice Democrats threaten the status quo of the powerful, from D.C. to Wall Street.

We wanted to recap just some of what we’re up against going into an election year. AIPAC spent much of the year smearing the Squad for standing up for the lives of Palestinians. AIPAC even ran these disgusting, misleading Facebook ads:

One of the despicable ads continued a smear campaign against Ilhan Omar started by Fox News, the GOP, and the far-right comparing her to "terrorists."

Fox News targeted the Squad for speaking out when Palestinians were being displaced and killed by the Israeli government earlier this year.

This is all to sow hate against the Squad. We can’t stand for it.

Help Justice Democrats fight back against these awful smear campaigns by chipping in $10 right now. We expect even more attacks during 2022, when the Squad faces re-election races.

Right wing groups were already spending campaign money against the Squad this year and we know they’ll spend more and more this year trying to tear down Cori, Jamaal, AOC, Ilhan, Rashida, and Ayanna.

Corporate Democrats will continue their smears too. They want to blame progressives for everything, even when it’s their own fault — for listening to Wall Street instead of the people.

Right after Democrats lost elections in Virginia, Corporate Democrats started blaming progressives for the GOP victory.

When corporate Democrats lose, they blame progressives. They did it when the House majority shrunk after the 2020 election. They’ll do it at every turn because they will never admit responsibility. Yet, it’s the Democratic establishment’s failure to deliver for the people that weakens the party in elections. Corporate Dems listen to corporate lobbyists instead of the people. This is the problem. NOT progressives advocating for strong transformative policies.

This is what we’re up against. A political establishment always ready to attack Justice Democrats. We know 2022 will be a tough election year, and we need to step up now to have the resources to fight back.

We need to show that we won’t back off our calls for economic, social, racial, and environmental justice.

We can defeat Big Oil’s favorite Democrat

 

In 2 months, in-person early voting for our first 2022 primary starts. And we have a chance to defeat an anti-abortion Democrat who votes against labor unions and action on climate change.

Justice Democrat Jessica Cisneros is taking on corporate Democrat Henry Cuellar in Texas’ 28th Congressional District.

As soon as polls open and mail ballots arrive to voters in TX-28, we need to ensure folks are ready to elect Jessica — a progressive fighter for the people. Cuellar is Big Oil’s favorite Democrat, and he’s been the ONLY Democrat in the House this year to vote against labor unions and abortion rights. He’s the most conservative Democrat in the House. We need to defeat Cuellar.

We here at Justice Democrats made our first mark on Congress when we helped elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018. Not only did we change politics by helping send her to D.C., we ousted one of the most powerful Democrats in the House.

By recruiting and helping to elect AOC, Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, and others, we’ve built progressive power in Congress for the first time in a long time. But we know we still have a long way to go to transform the Democratic Party and pass Medicare for All and a Green New Deal.

Our next step in that process is electing Jessica Cisneros. But we don’t know if we can get outspent 5-to-1 and still come out on top. The Wall Street, fossil fuel, and corporate PAC money will keep flowing to Cuellar as primary day approaches. We’re relying on a flood of grassroots donations — $5, $27, $50, whatever folks can afford — to help us close this fundraising gap.

The political establishment will do absolutely everything it can to stop more Justice Democrats from winning a seat in Congress. Corporate Democrats don’t want to see Jessica and her support for Medicare for All and a Green New Deal unseat their friend, Rep. Cuellar.

The hateful attacks won’t stop

 

Last week at a fundraiser, conspiracy theorist Lauren Boebert described a fictitious encounter with Ilhan Omar, in which she implied that Capitol Police mistook Ilhan as a terrorist. This isn’t the first time right-wing extremists have targeted Ilhan and the rest of the Squad with hateful and dangerous rhetoric.

Since Ilhan Omar was elected, right-wing extremists have attacked Ilhan for her identity as a Black Muslim woman fighting for progressive change in Congress. Donald Trump frequently used attacks against Ilhan to energize his base, and now his supporters in Congress are doing the same thing.

We’re working to elect more women of color, including more Muslim women, to Congress this year. 

Ilhan didn’t come to Congress to fight with Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Greene, or other right-wing extremists. She was elected to fight for racial justice, economic equality, health care for all, and so much more. But when Lauren Boebert makes inflammatory comments about Ilhan and Rashida Tliab, she perpetuates the anti-Muslim bigotry used to dehumanize and attack Muslims across the country.

Anti-Muslim bigotry has no place in Congress, and we know that these hateful attacks won’t stop.

Henry Cuellar

 

Henry Cuellar is the most conservative Democrat in the U.S. House. He is one of the only Democrats opposing the progressive policies in the Build Back Better Act. He was the only House Democrat to vote against abortion protections in September.

Cuellar even feeds into right-wing scare tactics on immigration. This is him on Fox News:

We endorsed Jessica Cisneros, the progressive fighter running against Cuellar, on Day 1. She’s an immigration attorney and a fierce supporter of a Green New Deal and Medicare for All. While Cuellar is on Fox News trying to divide and conquer people with lies, Jessica works with immigrants to secure their rights. While Cuellar is taking corporate cash from Republicans and Big Oil to obstruct the Democratic agenda, Jessica is working for a Green New Deal.

The differences couldn’t be more stark. But here’s the thing: Nearly 90% of Congressional races are won by the candidate who spends more money. The most recent available data shows that Cuellar has more than *$2 million* in his campaign account. Jessica has just a fraction of that, but with our support and the support of grassroots donors like you, we can still win.
