CC News Letter 05 Sept - New Climate Study: Arctic Heat Fueled Deadly February Texas Freeze

Dear Friend,

New research published Friday suggests that melting Arctic sea ice caused by global heating may be responsible for the deadly deep freeze that devastated much of North America and plunged millions of Texans into darkness in February. While climate researchers have previously connected the phenomena of polar heating and mid-latitute freezes, a new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Science is the first to link Arctic warming and February’s cold snap.

Patriotic Snitch: Bob Hawke as US Informant
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

In June, a rather unremarkable revelation was made that Hawke had been something of an errand boy for the US imperium, a spiller of the beans and something of what Australians would call a “dobber”.  Cameron Coventry, in an
article published that month, makes much of embassy and diplomatic cables covering the late Hawke between 1973 and 1979.  “During this time, he divulged information [to the US] about the Whitlam government (1972-75), the Fraser government (1975-83), Labor, and the labour movement.”    What is less than flattering for the Australian establishment is that snitching and informing on colleagues and their various circles was more than an errant pastime: it was entrenched practise.

Police attack farmers in Moga
by Harsh Thakor

The Moga police on Thursday used water cannons and cane-charged the farmers who were protesting on the national highway outside the new grain market where SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal was to address a public meeting. The farmers were already unhappy over the attitude of the Moga police as the cops had raided the houses of local farm activists on Wednesday night to detain them so that
Thursday’s protest against the SAD chief could be averted

The leaky lifeboat of the ‘100 days work scheme’
by T Venkat and Mathivanan

For the past year and half, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, or colloquially called the ‘100 days employment scheme’ has been in great demand in rural Tamil Nadu. While it had already proved its value as an anti-poverty measure across rural India, its popularity has only multiplied during the economic depression that followed the Covid lockdowns. In this two part series    T. Venkat and Mathivanan examine the benefits and pitfalls of the scheme, that needs to be expanded and strengthened across the entire country in this period of great economic distress for both the rural and urban poor.

Gail Omvedt : A tribute
by Cynthia Stephen

in the social sciences in India for decades. Author of over 25 books and a series of well-received columns for the Hindu of yesteryears, she was also an incisive and insightful analyst of Indian society, and a grounded grassroots activist as well. Despite being born and educated in the US, she made India her home after her doctoral research work on the work of non Brahman people’s movements like that of the Phule couple.
