How can we provide perpetually affordable housing?

The availability of affordable housing is one of the most difficult issues facing working families and individuals across the country. Housing advocates have long been recommending actions to preserve existing housing, produce new affordable units and protect tenants and homeowners.

The Sanders Institute has researched these advocate’s ideas in action and has created a series of reports, videos, and accompanying resources on a variety of approaches that have seen some success. The effective approach we are highlighting today is the concept of Community Land Trusts.

The current reality of higher prices and lower volume results in people being unable to enter the market of owning a home, one of the best steps to building financial security. A community land trust is a dynamic model of affordable housing and community development which can take on different forms. The common purpose is to keep homes permanently affordable. The common means is to hold the land in trust while allowing the homeowner to build equity in the structure. The common result is to ensure accessibility and security for present and future homeowners and renters and to expand the number of perpetually affordable homes.

Please take this opportunity to watch the video providing a glimpse into the first municipal land trust - started by Mayor Bernie Sanders, read the concise report on community land trusts, and access the comprehensive list of resources on the subject.

Thank you,

The Sanders Institute
