Today’s Action: Tell your representatives to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Act!

When a young activist named John Lewis led peaceful Black demonstrators across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in a historic march for voting rights in Selma, Alabama in 1965, he set in motion historic, sweeping change. Just months later, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965, jolting the American experiment into something resembling actual democracy.

These hard-fought protections stood firm until 2013, when the conservative majority in the Supreme Court gutted the act on specious grounds. Since then, the GOP has passed a crushing wave of racist voter-restriction laws.

Call (202-224-3121) or email your representatives and ask them to support the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act! Send them the link to the petition here with almost 100,000 signatures in support of voting rights legislation.

The act restores key elements removed by the erroneous Supreme Court ruling. Once passed, GOP voter-suppression tactics, such as restrictive voter ID laws, the reduction of multilingual voting materials, and the shutting down of Sunday voting to block Black churches from organizing their congregations, will be countered and challenged with badly needed oversight.

Without these protections, the GOP quickly reverted back to repressive practices that pre-date the Civil Rights Era, including harsh voter ID laws that disproportionately affect voters of color and the poor, the consolidation of polling stations, the purging of voter rosters, shortened early voting periods, and just flat-out "losing" ballots of Black voters.

Call (202-224-3121) or email your representatives and tell them to protect our right to free and fair elections by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act! Send them the link to the petition here with almost 100,000 signatures and counting in support of critical voting rights legislation.

PS — Please don't forget to sign the petition rescinding the state law that allows people to rape their spouses, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
