I would like to extend my thanks to the Barnstable Town Council for their positive vote on the ADU bylaw proposal at the July 15 council meeting. I look forward to seeing the effects this will have on year-round housing stock and hope to revisit it within two years to expand the housing options to both the main dwelling and ADU being rented concurrently.
That being said, we still have work to do and options to work towards. I would like to see the Barnstable Town Council look at Appendix Q, which the state has adopted, and which provides a building code for tiny homes. While I understand the challenges to tiny homes, I look forward to working to make this a feasible option for housing for those who do not qualify for assistance yet cannot afford the astronomical prices that single family homes command post-COVID. This would open up options not just to live, but to save, given the affordability of these homes. The housing crisis on Cape Cod is not going to end without action, and I am hopeful after this past year that we can get this done.
